Because We Homeschool Our 3 Teens, The Public School Wont Allow Them To Participate In Extra Activities, Why?
this is our first year homeschooling. We have a lot of positive reasons for it. However, as tax-paying citizens we feel we should be able to have our kids participate in activities in the school such as band, FFA, etc. We are involved in sports through the YMCA. The school will not allow this. I want to know what measures we can go to to make sure our legal tax-paying status gives us what we are paying for. If you have an agenda of ignorance against homeschooling, please do not waste my time or yours answering.

Although some families get some sort of tax refund for ome things. Every body pays, even if they don't have kids. I don't know if this is one of them. Schools get so much money per student enrolled in that particular school. . If your kids don't go there, than that school is not receiving your tax paying dollars for that student.

2006-04-05 05:28:53 Marcos-Diller says: i would actually go to the department of education in your state. sometimes the local districts are clueless. also it depends upon the legislation in your state. most states require schools to allow homeschoolers to particpate in extra-curricular activities so long as insurance waivers are signed and participation fees paid as it would be for students enrolled in the school. it could be the local principal is ignorant or misinformed. also i would suggest contacting your states homeschool association for information because they have probably had others go through a similar sitiation. good luck!

- tax paying citizen as you may be, students in band and sports also pay dues, so it's not all tax money.
- and in my school, band, jocks, orch., everyone had to be enrolled in five academic classes and passing with a c or above.
- have you just talked to the school, or the school board?
2006-04-07 12:34:57 Arminda-Carter says: As you will see, most states allow for participation with various conditions that need to be met. In the states without such legislation, it IS common for the schools or school districts to be able to decide for themselves. Some athletic leagues require the schools to allow home-schoolers to participate, and they may take disciplinary action against the school if they refuse. Bottom line is that you have many options and significant legal precedent on your side. Kudos to you for investing in your kids' futures by home-schooling them. However, that does not mean that you do not have options if the school refuses. I agree with trinitytough that you should check out http://www.hslda.org and specifically http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/000000/00000048.asp which has summary of each states laws regarding the participation of home-schoolers in public school activities.
